METALLIC CONDUITS

A metallic conduit is a metal tube used to protect and route electrical wiring. It is a common component in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations.

Types of Metallic Conduits

  1. EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing)

    • Thin-walled steel conduit (also called “thin-wall conduit”)

    • Easy to bend

    • Common in commercial buildings

  2. FMC (Flexible Metal Conduit)

    • Spiral-wound metal strip

    • Flexible, good for tight spaces or where vibration occurs

    • Often used for connecting equipment like motors

  3. LFMC (Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduit)

    • FMC with a waterproof jacket

    • Used where moisture protection is needed

Functions of Metallic Conduit

  • Physical protection for wires against impact and abrasion

  • EMI shielding (helps reduce electromagnetic interference)

  • Grounding path (metal provides continuity)

  • Organized routing of electrical cables
